BLACKHEATH PHILOSOPHY FORUM

About Blackheath
(Click for details of "Philosophy Weekends" below)

The village of Blackheath is in the upper Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia. At an altitude of 1065 metres, it is about 120 km west of Sydney, around 1 3/4 hours from central Sydney by car, or two hours by commuter rail. It lies near the highest part of the Blue Mountains National Park - one of eight conservation reserves that make up the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

The Blue Mountains (so named because of the bluish haze produced by the interplay of strong sunlight on fine droplets of eucalyptus oil released by the forests that cover the rugged tablelands and deep valleys) presented a major obstacle to explorers from the early colony in Sydney. Twenty five years elapsed from the establishment of the first settlement at Sydney (1788) to the crossing of the these mountains by Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson in 1813.

Charles Darwin visited Blackheath in 1832. The distinguished pre-historian, Vere Gordon Childe, fell to his death from Govett's Leap in 1956.

BLACKHEATH PHILOSOPHY WEEKENDS

(SPECIAL PACKAGE "DEAL")

Those who wish to come to the Forum need not, of course, take advantage of this weekend package - they can just turn up at Blackheath Public School, corner of Leichhardt Street and the Highway, at 4pm. If you would like to come on one of our weekend jaunts, please contact Sandra Darroch on 02 9365 1778.

The weekend schedule consists of:

SATURDAYS

Visitors to rendezvous at the Victory Café in Govett's Leap Road between 12-1pm on each Forum Saturday, for a leisurely, informal lunch (excellent bottle shop opposite)

3.30 pm - proceed, perhaps after a post-prandial stroll round Blackheath (or a visit to view the famous Leap, or waterfall) to the Blackheath Public School hall for the talk (4pm-5pm, followed by tea and questions for the speaker)

6pm - adjourn to nearby Tails guesthouse/restaurant for post-talk drinks with the speaker, and other attendees, around the log fire

7pm - dinner with the speaker at a local restaurant.

After 9pm - retire to chosen accommodation (see range of choice below)

SUNDAYS

10.30 am - Brunch at Brown's Siding café (reserved room) in Medlow Bath.

Leave for Sydney, etc, as the wind listeth

The cost - accommodation and dinner - will depend on the type of accommodation chosen (see below) but the all-up outlay - petrol or train fares excluded - should be less than $300, and nearer $250 if motel accommodation is your choice. (Obviously it will be cheaper per person for two people, as the accommodation cost is levied for the room rather than the people.)

ACCOMMODATION

There are no luxury hotels or similar accommodation in or near Blackheath (the Hydro is closed temporarily). The recommended choice is between two motels and several guesthouses (Blackheath also has two three-star hotels, but their accommodation is very basic - though one of them, Gardeners Inn, has one reasonable en-suite room).

(However, do keep in mind that from the previous day, Friday, it is "high season" up the Mountains - from April through to September - so accommodation costs are consequently higher.)

The motels - the Blackheath Motor Inn and the High Mountains Motel - are both on the highway, either side of the town centre, and are similar in price and accommodation (about $150 a night, plus breakfast).

However, there are at least five excellent guesthouses in Blackheath (and a very good one in Medlow Bath, too). They include (with indicative prices):

Glenella - (probably the most popular, and close to everything) - around $180

Parklands - (four-and-a-half stars, top of the range) - around $250 a room

Kubba Roonga - (some distance away, but said to be very nice) - around $230

Federation Gardens - (ditto) $240

Tails - (near the school, and where we are putting the speaker up) - $170

However, the rooms chosen, and whether they are available, determine the exact price, with the better rooms costing more. (The top room at Tails is $200.)

Don't leave it too late, remember that it's high-season starting April 1.

Let us know if you would like to come (FYI, attendance at the Forum is usually about 100-120 people).
