2nd
Tuesday Philosophy Forum
|
Northern
Sydney
|
2nd Tuesday Philosophy Forums are held (generally)
on the second Tuesday of each month. All those attending
have a chance to ask questions and put forward their
own point of view. In short, everyone will have the
opportunity to 'do' philosophy, not just watch or listen.
No prior knowledge of philosophy is required, the forum
for those who want more than pat answers to the big
questions. Just bring an open and inquisitive mind.

Philorum
|
Inner
Sydney
|
Philorum is provided to give almost everyone
an equal opportunity, over several meetings, to present
and discuss their ideas. You might be an academic philosopher,
be not clear on what philosophy is, or both. You might
be an experienced speaker or still terrified by public
speaking. Regardless, Philorum is a place for you. You
can give a prepared or impromptu piece. You may prefer
just to listen.

Ethics
Circles
|
Inner
Sydney
|
In the ancient world philosophy was a public pursuit
- often the product of a random encounter between citizens
going about their business, whatever it may be. More
recently, philosophy has mostly been developed inside
the academy. St James Ethics Centre provides
such informal opportunities for people of all walks
of life to come together in a public space to discuss
ethics and ethical or philosophical issues.
Our
'ethics circles' are held periodically in Sydney, Australia.
A circle of chairs is set up in the street and passers-by
are invited to talk to a philosopher: the Ethics Centre's
Executive Director, Dr Simon Longstaff.

Philosophy
nights at Steki Taverna
|
Newtown
|
The
main aim of the Philosophy Nights is to make
philosophy, including contemporary academic philosophy,
more accessible to the general public and to do it in
a way that is not only informative but also entertaining
and engaging. Not accessible through simplification,
but rather accessible through a personal experience
of philosophy as a way of life.
The
Philosophy Nights are modeled on Plato's Symposium,
Plato's dialogue on Love. In the original Greek, the
word symposion, means coming together in friendship
to drink, eat and engage in philosophical dialogue or
dialectic and above all celebrate life.

Philo
Agora
.
|
Glebe
|
A
recently formed Philosophy group Philo Agora
- meets every second Tuesday evening at the Fair
Trade Coffee Company in Glebe.
Philo
Agora is interested primarily in philosophical issues
which affect us all. Talks relate to a philosophy or
there is a strong philosophical theme. Last year the
group had a diverse series of talks ranging from the
Death of Democracy, Deconstruction, Stem Cell Transplantation
to Immortality. Several of the talks are on the web
site. www.philoagora.wordpress.com.
The
group's format is a 15 to 20 minutes presentation, then
it breaks into smaller groups to discuss the topic.
After this the microphone is passed around and the audience
all have an opportunity to talk for a maximum
of 3 minutes. Debate is lively, with a strong emphasis
on participation. All welcome.
